What are some of the potential employability opportunities doing courses like Sociology or Global Studies from NUS /NUS College? In general, Global Studies graduates go on to pursue a wide range of careers. The exposure you get to global issues is valuable to organisations big and small, regardless of what they do. Being in NUS College enables you to think and interact with people from many disciplines -- a sought-after skill in today's job economy! Some careers my seniors are working towards include museum and gallery work, public policy, and public health. You may read more about how Global Studies helps in various careers here.
Do you take any Political Science modules in Global Studies too? How do they inform your understanding in your major?
I do! I have taken PS3240 International Security and PS3262 Managing Non-Profit Organisations. Both allow me to better understand political instability and global governance in the modern world, and give me hands-on opportunities to practice what I've learned through writing political memos and performing SWOT analyses of non-profits, among other assignments. While NUS College gives me breadth of knowledge, the modules I take in GL give me depth in my chosen field.
Hi there! I'm Shauna, a Year 3 student majoring in Global Studies. How is Global Studies (GL) different from/complements Political Science (PS)?
Both are offered by the Department of Political Science. Both majors are compatible with the NUS College curriculum.
PS students focus on the theory and practice of government and politics. You will take mostly modules from the Department of Political Science, focusing on four subfields: Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory and Governance and Public Policy.
GL students learn how globalisation affects us economically, socially, politically and culturally. You can take a range of modules from almost any department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. You may choose from one of four themes:
• Colonialism, Security, and Global Order (mostly History modules)
• Global Health, Environment, and Technology (mostly Communications and New Media, Geography, English Language & Literature, and Sociology modules)
• Global Political Economy (mostly Economics, Geography, Political Science and Asian Studies modules)
• Peoples, Cultures, and Globalisation (mostly Sociology, English Language & Literature, and Asian Studies modules)
